2020 looks to bring with it a major period of change for the energy market. A big player ready to challenge the status quo is Octopus and their Tesla Energy Plan.
The landscape is changing for the better. Smart homes are on the rise. Consumers are generating their own solar power. Parties are promising serious commitments to minimise our environmental impact.
A company bringing all of those exciting improvements into one neat box is Octopus.
Octopus are one of the few suppliers in the UK of 100% renewable energy. And now they’ve teamed up with Tesla to start a renewable home revolution.
Sounds impressive, right?
That’s because it is. Octopus have launched an innovation in energy usage with a new tariff: the Tesla Energy Plan.
The idea is that usage will become automated, lowering your bills and minimising your carbon footprint.
There are a few things you need to take part. The tariff requires you to have:
- A Tesla car and Wall Connector chargepoint
- A Tesla Powerwall
- Solar panels
Tick those boxes? On this new tariff, you’ll benefit from:
- No daily standing charge
- 8p/kWh important rate (nearly half the price of the national standard of 15p)
- 8p/kWh export rate
It balances supply and demand, optimising your energy usage costs and transitioning homes to sustainable power.
The Tesla Energy Plan is part of a bigger picture; one that wants to make the best use of renewable energy.
The inclusion of export tariffs is crucial in this. Because those who have solar PV will rarely use all their solar energy at the points it’s generated. A fair deal of it will be sent to the grid. If customers get paid for this, it stands to reason that more will turn to solar energy.
This will be enforced by law from January 2020 as part of the Smart Export Guarantee. The hope is that this new law will encourage all suppliers to design competitive deals to capture new customers; something Octopus has immediately led the way with.
In doing so, Octopus have put the concept of a ‘connected home’ on a substantial platform. The new tariff helps us move towards a smart grid powered entirely by renewables… the knock on effect could be enormous.
